New Jersey’s Cannabis Training Academy (CTA) has enrolled over 1,000 students since its launch in October 2024, offering free education for entrepreneurs entering the legal cannabis market. The state-backed program provides essential guidance on licensing, zoning, business operations, and raising capital, with a focus on supporting businesses in Impact Zones. As New Jersey’s cannabis industry surpasses $2 billion in total sales, the academy plays a crucial role in expanding market accessibility.
The Cannabis Training Academy is a strategic effort to bridge the gap between legalization and economic participation, particularly for communities affected by the War on Drugs. Unlike other cannabis education programs, which focus on career development, the CTA is geared toward future business owners and license holders. This focus aligns with the state’s commitment to social equity in the cannabis industry, as outlined in the CREAMM Act and NJ-CRC regulations.
While the industry continues to grow, officials remain concerned about market accessibility. Many conditional license holders have yet to open their businesses, making CTA a vital resource for helping applicants navigate regulatory and financial challenges.
At the same time, advocacy groups are pushing for home cultivation rights, arguing that residents should be allowed to grow their own cannabis. Governor Phil Murphy has expressed openness to the idea but prefers to give the legal market more time to develop. Meanwhile, the state is also preparing for the launch of licensed cannabis consumption lounges, which are expected to further boost the industry’s economic impact.
