Majority of NJ Governor Hopefuls Support Marijuana Home Grow

24 March 2025

With New Jersey's gubernatorial primaries approaching, home cannabis cultivation has emerged as a key policy issue. Although recreational marijuana has been legal in the state since 2022, New Jersey remains one of the few legal-use states that does not allow residents to grow cannabis at home. Now, a majority of candidates—across both Democratic and Republican lines—say they want to change that.

Among the six Democrats running for governor, four support home grow for both medical and recreational use, while one supports it for medical use only. On the Republican side, two candidates back home cultivation for medical users, and two endorse it for both medical and recreational users. Advocates and candidates alike argue that home cultivation could address the state's high cannabis prices and help curb the illegal market, which continues to flourish despite the state's growing number of dispensaries.
